Copycat by Naomi McDonald is a one-woman show with an all-female line up. Naomi provides a lighthearted, whimsical take on some of Britain’s best loved and in other cases marmite household names.

Naomi is a stellar impressionist who can switch from Theresa May to Katie Price at the drop of a hat, or in this case a wig. She hosts the show as Fearne Cotton which works well as a formula for introducing new characters or ‘guests’ as she refers to them. In a nice touch she drops out of character from time to time, revealing her personality which brings a warmth to the show.

Her singing abilities add another layer to to the comedy caricatures. Whether its Adele belting out an original ballad about a cup of tea, or Beyonce’s love song to her staff, the comedy songs keep the energy of the show high.

Her impressionist stripes are well earned when Katie Price hosts a dating game with a member of the audience who is invited on stage to meet the likes of Cheryl Cole and Jodie Marsh. Has-been celebs who are likely to end up on such a show; but it’s not just the Z-listers. Naomi treats us to guest appearances from the likes of Lady Gaga and Jess Glynne – and let’s not forget Beyonce.

She skilfully walks the line of funny and flattering when portraying these women. She manages to convey Melania Trump with a wig and her facial expression alone. While she opts for the classic Melania narrative, she does so in such a way that gives her character power and authority. A skill she will hopefully apply to more contemporary characters in the future.
